EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based, eight-phase trauma protocol created by Francine Shapiro in 1989. As she walked through the park one day, Francine noticed that her natural eye movements of looking back and forth helped her disturbing thoughts (about her cancer diagnosis) disappear. When she tried to bring back those negative thoughts, she couldn’t.

Francine started practicing this new therapy with other therapists and clients and created the eight-phase protocol. The idea is those eye movements are beneficial because they seem to mimic REM sleep.

While utilizing bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, buzzers, or tones), EMDR helps target memories and recent and past events by incorporating the cognitive beliefs, distressing emotions, body sensations, and images associated with those memories.

EMDR is a comprehensive therapy that can provide corrective information to the internal memory network. It is a somatic approach to healing trauma and other distressing and disturbing life experiences and events.

Don’t let trauma hold you back any longer.

Trauma is defined as anything that you cannot process, digest, or sequence and continues to cause distress and uncomfortable symptoms. These traumatic events cause us to make disempowering assumptions about ourselves and the world around us.

Trauma and some of the feelings caused by trauma (e.g., sleep disturbances and panic attacks) are problems standardly addressed using EMDR. However, many other issues like food cravings, performance anxiety, stress, feelings of unworthiness, negative thoughts, pain management, shame, and embarrassment are also effectively treated with EMDR.

Anxiety, depression, grief, loss, and overwhelming emotions can make it impossible to get on with life. These are intense emotions, and overcoming these feelings requires mind-body treatments, which EMDR provides.
